Workshop Synopsis

Assessment literacy is the ability to create and use valid and reliable assessments as a classroom teacher in order to facilitate student learning. While all professional teachers have completed some degree of preparation in the domain of assessment, there is objective and anecdotal evidence that assessment is a relative weakness for many teachers. Consequently, school administrators often recognize a need to support and intentionally develop their teachers in this domain.

This one-day session will introduce theoretical foundations of assessment literacy, a model for developing assessment literacy with teachers, and strategies for leading for assessment literacy with classroom teachers.


Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand theoretical foundations of assessment literacy
  • Understand a model of assessment literacy for classroom teachers and explain the connections among core principles of assessment
  • Identify several supervisory strategies for supporting and leading teachers as they use assessment to facilitate student learning

About the Trainer - Associate Professor Chris Gareis

Gareis best 135mmAssociate Professor Chris Gareis currently serve as the Associate Dean for Teacher Education and Professional Services in the School of Education at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, At William & Mary, Dr Gareis teach doctoral, master's, and baccalaureate courses in curriculum, instruction, instructional leadership, and assessment. Chris is also a licensed professional teacher in Virginia and has taught 8th, 10th, and 11th grade English, public speaking, and 6th grade math and science, both in public and private school settings. Chris holds K-12 administrative credentials and has served as a middle school assistant principal and principal and also as assistant to the superintendent. Chris joined the School of Education at William & Mary in 2001 and was tenured as Associate Professor in 2008. Chris have served twice in the role as Associate Dean, first from 2001 to 2005, and then from 2009 to the present. In this role, he oversees the teacher preparation programs, including coordinating field experiences, partnerships, accreditation, and the Clinical Faculty Program.

Dr Gareis is also an active educational researcher and writer. His areas of interest include classroom-based assessment, teacher preparation, mentoring, teacher evaluation, teacher compensation, strategic planning, and program evaluation. Chris has co-authored books on teacher-made assessments, teacher portfolios, and teacher compensation. His scholarship also includes journal articles, a book chapter, and numerous professional presentations and addresses at local, state, and national conferences. Chris was honored to be a co-recipient of the first School Technology Leadership Research Award from UCEA in 2007 and to receive the Charles Clear Research Award from VERA in 2009.

Workshop Fee for Open Workshop

S$250.00 per participant. If 2 or more participants from the same school/organization attend the same workshop, the discounted fee will be S$200.00 per participant for that particular workshop. Fees are subject to GST and include all training materials, 2 tea breaks and a lunch

  • No refunds will be made for cancellations or in the case of absentees.
  • The Academy accepts replacements for registered participants who are unable to attend for whatever reasons.
