Workshop Synopsis

This workshop will address several areas that are essential for schools desiring to develop a plan for comprehensive education for all stakeholders (students, educators, parents and community members).

The workshop will begin with an overview of what we now know from research and informed practice on effective character education initiatives. Afterwards, we will move to a model that was developed and successfully implemented in the Trillium Lakelands School District that built on the work of Philip Vincent and his book, Developing Character in Students: A Primer. This model was, and can be used today, to develop a comprehensive character education initiative.

At each step of the model, research and strategies will be provided to enable the participants to develop a comprehensive understanding of each stage of development. Before moving onto the next stage in the model, participants will develop classroom and school wide strategies that can become the basis of each school’s efforts.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes

During this workshop participants will learn:

  • What research and informed practice is showing from throughout the world on effective character education practices
  • How to utilize an established framework on how to build a comprehensive character initiative using a step-by step strategy.
  • How to involve all stakeholders (students, educators, parents and community members) in informing the efforts of the school.
  • How to begin the steps on assessing the success of the effort.

Upon the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have applied the model in determining strategies that they can do to begin enhancing their efforts. They will also be able to use this format to assess their present efforts, celebrate their strengths and use the model to guide them on their improvement efforts.
