Workshop Description

Learning Study projects have been widely carried out in schools in Hong Kong since early 2000 through various projects related to teacher professional development. Learning Study is different from Lesson Study in that the Variation Theory is embedded to guide teachers in addressing the focus and issues in student learning. Teachers in Japan are well used to engaging in Lesson Study in which they seem to be aware of what to look for and where to focus on for each of the study. But when this mode of teachers’ professional development was adapted to Hong Kong, it was difficult for teachers to focus their study on the meaningful aspects of learning. With the introduction of the Variation Theory by focusing on the content to be learned by the students, it is found that a big impact can be made to improve students’ learning.

The four sessions conducted in the two days of the workshop are meant to provide an introduction to the theory, illustrated with a number of learning study cases carried out in Hong Kong classrooms.
