The Skills that Matter:

Teaching Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Competencies in Any Classroom

Together, we can develop socially and emotionally engaged, career-equipped, lifelong learners. Based on the book with the same title, this workshop will lead participants through evidence-based instructional practices for embedding social and emotional learning into core content instruction. Specific instructional practices and activities from various primary and secondary content-area classes will be shared, as well as important take-aways for quality social and emotional instruction. Leave with a plan for assessing students' competency knowledge and perceptions, embedding instructional activities for developing skills, and monitoring learning through formative performance-based assessment techniques.

Participants will:

  • Analyze current implementation of intra- and interpersonal competencies (i.e., self-efficacy, self-regulation and assertiveness) in content-area instruction.
  • Practice intrapersonal and interpersonal competency instructional activities.
  • Learn and identify research-based instructional strategies that simultaneously teach social/emotional skills and content-area priorities.
  • Design a plan for assessing students' social/emotional knowledge and perceptions, developing students' skills, and monitoring learning through formative performance-based assessment techniques.
