Facilitating Data-driven Conversations to Enhance Pedagogical Practices

(for Secondary School Teachers)

Workshop Description

“The purpose of staff development is not just to implement isolated instructional innovations; its central purpose is to build strong collaborative work cultures that will develop the long-term capacity for change.” (Michael Fullan, 2009)

The main purpose of this workshop is to provide opportunities for teacher participants to engage in meaningful and structured collaborative inquiry into effective student learning. Through the analysis of student data/artefact, it will enable them to make more accurate and informed decisions on their pedagogical practices.

By examining evidence-based student data/artefacts that are done in regular classroom work, participants would have more accurate feedback on learner understanding and progress. By using a framework, ‘Using the Data Process, participants will be guided to analyse and make sense of student data, to better support their students’ learning and progress using approriate pedagogical strategies.

Objectives:

At the end of the workshop, teachers are able to:

  1. Use protocols and tools to diagnose learners’ needs from student data/artefact;
  2. Engage in collaborative inquiry, guided by the Using the Data Process, to examine authentic student data/artefact for possible intervention strategies that enhances pedagogical practice; and
  3. Conduct post lesson colloquium that will reflect and glean insights as a team into effective pedagogical practices for learner engagement and progress.

Pre-workshop

  • Relevant readings and resources to be provided that will deepen teachers’ knowledge in understanding how student data can be used to effectively inform and understand learners’ needs; and
  • Appropriate student data/artefact to be brought in by participants for analysis and reflection on teachers’ pedagogical practices.

About the Presenter: Mdm N V Rani

Mdm Rani photoMdm Rani has been in the teaching service since 1978 and has experienced a range of learning experiences during her education career. She started her teaching experience in a primary school and retired as a Master Teacher (Geography) in 2019.

As a Master Teacher (Geography) from 2010 to Mar 2019, Mdm Rani was involved in the conceptualisation and conduct of a wide variety of workshops with a student-centric focus; e.g. Data-driven conversations for enhancing pedagogical decisions, Differentiated Instruction for student accommodation, Assessment for learning and Literacy in Geography and Learning Study.

In Nov 2019, a workshop for school teachers on using Data-driven conversations to sharpen and enhance teachers' pedagogical decisions, was very well received by participants who gave invaluable feedback:

  • Thank you! The time spent analyzing/ examining our student's data for daily assignments was empowering. My understanding of collaborative inquiry is sharpened.
  • I enjoyed the ws-style with teachers' participation which increases the engagement and deepened discussion.
  • This tool is able to help teachers go deep into thinking collaboratively what to do to close students' learning gap. It can improve our way of setting the questions and also to improve how we can feedback to our students.
  • Using Data-driven dialogues helps me understand students' needs better through effective and constructive discussions with peer teachers.

Rani is convinced that PD must empower teachers to play a more nuanced role as pedagogical leaders and experts to effectively manage and support students' on-going learning needs; that would enhance students' potential and achievement.
