Differentiated Instruction: Bringing The Best Out of Our Learners

Workshop Description

Engaging learning requires a renewed focus on the learner to understand and provide for different needs, abilities and backgrounds so as to optimise learning for all students. This course aims to assist participants in developing a critical understanding of different learning needs in the regular classroom.

Participants will learn to use a variety of research-based curriculum design models to develop appropriate curricula and teaching approaches, review, adapt and differentiate existing curricula. More importantly, teachers will be able to develop rich content to differentiate learning to meet varied learning needs, as well as create diagnostic tools to better evaluate the effectiveness of the designed curricula.

Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand current trends and issues in general education;
  • Develop an awareness into personal beliefs about learner differences and exceptionality and the influence of these beliefs on teaching and learning;
  • Understand major theories of intelligence and the broad concepts of differentiation for students' readiness, interests and learning profiles;
  • Use the Differentiated Instruction framework to plan for the learning needs of different groups of students through differentiation of content, teaching approaches and assessment tasks;
  • Learn and apply different questioning strategies to enhance effective thinking in students;
  • Develop the ability to critique and review curriculum materials and adapt curricula to meet varied learner needs.At the end of the workshop, teachers are able to:

About the Presenter: Mr John Yeo

 

John Yeo photoJohn Yeo is currently an educational consultant with Principals Academy. Formerly the Deputy Principal of Singapore Institute of Management International Academy, he crafted and spearheaded signature programs such as STEM (i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Enterprise Education. John was the first Asian recipient of the Ruth B. Noller Research Grant Award for his research on Problem Finding in Creative Inquiry in 2017. This annual award by the U.S. Creative Education Foundation supports emerging, paradigm-shifting research with high potential for impact in the field of creativity.

He previously held the position of Assistant Head for Professional Development in the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Academic Group in National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He taught the Masters level modules as well as Management and Leadership Studies program in NIE specializing in areas such as creative and critical thinking, problem finding, curriculum design, teachers' professional learning, as well as authentic assessment. He has written and co-edited books such as Mastering the Art of Authentic Assessment, Sustainable School Reform through Lesson Study for Learning Community and other publications.

He was on the Ministry of Education's (MOE HQ) Critical and Inventive Thinking Taskforce that proposed new curriculum directions and implementation road map for all Singapore schools. He was also the lead curriculum consultant for the national review of MOE's Innovation Program under the Gifted Education Branch. Deeply passionate about curriculum reform, John engages leaders with dialogue on educational issues such as development of curriculum policies and designing for 21st century learning.

Remarks: A minimum of 20 participants will be required for the workshop to proceed.

Workshop Fee: S$350.00 per participant. If 2 or more participants from the same school/organization attend the same workshop, the discounted fee will be S$300.00 per participant for that particular workshop. Fees are subject to GST and include all training materials, 1 tea break and a lunch.

Other Information: Registration is on a first-come-first serve basis. No refunds will be made for cancellations or in the case of absentees. The Academy accepts replacements for registered participants who are unable to attend for whatever reasons.
