Designing Applied Learning with Creative Problem Solving

 

 

Workshop Description

This course provides practical experience in using principles of 21st Century Learning by applying Creative Problem Solving (CPS) to curriculum design and facilitate student group learning strategies. The course emphasizes guided practice and independent work in realistic teaching situations to develop independent student-learners and reflective teacher practitioners. Teachers will acquire an overview of the Creative Problem Solving: Thinking Skills Model) and will build on their knowledge of CPS facilitation and questioning strategies to develop instructional designs and examine ways to modify teaching and learning with CPS in various groups or subject areas.

Key Understandings

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. appreciate thinking skills with a diverse set of problem-solving, decision making and creativity tools;
  2. recognize the flexible and eclectic nature of Creative Problem Solving as a change leadership model;
  3. apply a variety of creative thinking tools to design more innovative processes and products;
  4. apply the Creative Problem Solving (Thinking Skills Model) to assess learning needs and to plan appropriate interventions
  5. extend the stages, processes, tools and mindset into Applied Learning curriculum design and assessments.

 


About the Presenter: Mr John Yeo

 

John Yeo photoJohn Yeo is currently the Headmaster of US-Singapore International School in Korea. Concurrently he is also an educational consultant with Principals Academy. Formerly the Deputy Principal of Singapore Institute of Management International Academy, he crafted and spearheaded signature programs such as STEM (i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Enterprise Education. John was the first Asian recipient of the Ruth B. Noller Research Grant Award for his research on Problem Finding in Creative Inquiry in 2017. This annual award by the U.S. Creative Education Foundation supports emerging, paradigm-shifting research with high potential for impact in the field of creativity.

He previously held the position of Assistant Head for Professional Development in the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Academic Group in National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He taught the Masters level modules as well as Management and Leadership Studies program in NIE specializing in areas such as creative and critical thinking, problem finding, curriculum design, teachers' professional learning, as well as authentic assessment. He has written and co-edited books such as Mastering the Art of Authentic Assessment, Sustainable School Reform through Lesson Study for Learning Community and other publications.

He was on the Ministry of Education's (MOE HQ) Critical and Inventive Thinking Taskforce that proposed new curriculum directions and implementation road map for all Singapore schools. He was also the lead curriculum consultant for the national review of MOE's Innovation Program under the Gifted Education Branch. Deeply passionate about curriculum reform, John engages leaders with dialogue on educational issues such as development of curriculum policies and designing for 21st century learning.

Singapore Time GMT+8: Participants can choose either the morning or afternoon session
Run 1 (AM): 9.00 am to 1.00 pm for each day (Morning session: please click here to register)

Run 2 (PM): 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm for each day (Afternoon session: please click here to register)

Closing date: 30 October 2020 Friday

Workshop Fee: S$180.00 per participant. If 2 or more participants from the same school/organization attend the same workshop, the discounted fee will be S$150.00 per participant for that particular workshop. Fees are subject to GST.

Other Information: Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis. No refunds will be made for cancellations or in the case of absentees. The Academy accepts replacements for registered participants who are unable to attend for whatever reasons.
