Succeeding with Habits of Mind

The Habits of Mind are one of the true classics in education. Derived by Art Costa and Bena Kallick, the Habits of Mind describe what the most efficacious learners do when confronted with problems, the solutions to which are not immediately apparent.

For more than 25 years, schools around the world have been working to improve student learning outcomes by infusing the Habits of Mind into their curriculum and classrooms. Over that time we have seen student learning outcomes improve and schools flourish as the Habits of Mind are adopted and lived throughout the school community.

habits of Mind Summary

To succeed with the Habits of Mind, we must shift from teaching about the Habits (and asking students to “use” them) to teaching for the Habits of Mind. We must also take action to ensure students explicitly develop and improve how they engage with the Habits.

In this course, we will go beyond the basics. We'll ensure your work with the Habits of Mind has a significant and enduring impact on student learning outcomes. James Anderson shares his insights – from his own classroom experiences and his many years working with schools around the globe – to ensure you succeed with the Habits of Mind.

You will be introduced to the Habits of Mind Profile Tool, a unique and powerful tool that allows you to take a snapshot of your students’ Habits of Mind. With the power to assess your students’ strengths and weaknesses, you can plot a path for their development and monitor their progress.

For schools that choose one of the whole-school options, you’ll gain access to more than 10 hours of interviews with school leaders who have successfully infused the Habits of Mind into their schools. Their insights and tips will ensure the Habits of Mind become a powerful and enduring part of your school culture.

Bonuses include interviews with experts, including Art Costa and Bena Kallick, who share their wisdom on how to succeed with the Habits of Mind.

The Impact of Habits of Mind

Over the years we've seen schools take many different approaches to work with the Habits of Mind. Unfortunately, not all of them are equally successful.

The tipping point for succeeding with Habits of Mind is to shift from teaching about the Habits of Mind, and asking students to "use" the Habits of Mind, to teaching "for" the Habits of Mind and taking teacher action to ensure students are explicitly developing and improving how they engage with the Habits of Mind.

This course will show you how to go beyond the basics, and ensure your work with Habits of Mind has a significant impact on student learning outcomes.

The Habits of Mind Profiling Tool

Discover how to take a snapshot of your student's Habits of Mind with this powerful profile tool. Engage in deep conversations about their strengths and weaknesses with the Habits of Mind and create plans for further development. Assess and track the growth of the Habits of Mind.
