The Formative Five:

Fostering Grit, Empathy, and Other Success Skills Every Student Needs

Students need to learn the 3R's, but that is not sufficient. Academics should be the floor, not the ceiling of our aspirations. We must go beyond academics and develop students' social-emotional learning (SEL), in order to prepare them for a world in which the only constant is change. To do this, we must use a school's culture to develop students' Formative Five: empathy, self-control, integrity, embracing diversity, and grit. In this session, we will learn about the Formative Five success skills and how culture can be used to teach SEL We will leave with an action plan for our school.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Will learn the value of SEL
  • Will learn the Formative Five Success Skills
  • Will come away with – learn and develop - ideas and strategies to implement SEL
