(For Secondary School English Teachers)


The workshop on Inquiry through Dialogue to Support Writing in the Secondary English Classroom will enable teachers to understand the role of inquiry through dialogue to support the writing of differing genres and for differing purposes and will provide a forum for discussing and critiquing practical strategies for teaching and assessing writing within the classroom. A brief summary of key theories on how secondary school students can be supported to build their writing skills will be presented along with current research on effective writing pedagogies. In particular, the workshops will focus upon dialogic strategies that can support various writing skills and capacity to write different genres.

Outcomes

  1. Understand the key theory and research underpinning the use of inquiry through dialogue to support writing
  2. Discuss and engage with practical strategies for using inquiry through dialogue to support writing instruction and development in the secondary classroom
  3. Describe principles for building environments that support inquiry through dialogue to support writing in the secondary classroom.

 


 About the Presenter: Dr Jennifer Shand




Doctor Jennifer Shand is a lecturer in English Curriculum studies at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Western Australia. Her research interests include the teaching of literature, writing pedagogy, middle and upper school English curriculum, cross-curricula literacy, and young adult fiction. She has worked at the level of Senior Teacher and Head of Department where she mentored new and English pre-service teachers, developed teaching programs and taught English and Literature at all year levels.

Other Information: Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis. No refunds will be made for cancellations or in the case of absentees. The Academy accepts replacements for registered participants who are unable to attend for whatever reasons.
