Improving Online Teaching and Learning:

Practical Workshops for Tertiary Educators

OVERVIEW

This series of practical workshops is designed to assist tertiary educators to improve the design and delivery of online and blended learning programs. It is broadly based, encompassing the development of knowledge and skills in areas including e-pedagogy and online assessment, online curriculum planning and learning design, identifying and evaluating suitable web-based learning content, developing and using basic multimedia learning objects, laying out courses in the LMS, and promoting and monitoring learner engagement.

The workshops are staffed by a range of experts from different disciplines with knowledge and skills in learning design, video production and online teaching and assessment, and are practical and applied in nature. Participants are required to have access to a ‘sandbox’ LMS site, as they will apply knowledge learnt during the modules to redeveloping course design and content, with learning designer and academic guidance and support.

While practical components of the workshop will be Moodle-based, the principles learnt will be applicable to different learning management systems.

LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE PROGRAM

Upon successful completion of the workshops, participants will:

  • Learning Outcome 1: understand and apply basic principles underpinning effective online learning and course/unit design to support learner engagement and enhance overall student experience;

  • Learning Outcome 2: understand the critical role of the teacher as the architect of online learning environments that maximise student participation and learning;

  • Learning Outcome 3: be able to design and build basic multimedia learning objects using available applications;

  • Learning Outcome 4: understand different types and forms of assessment suited to online learning;

  • Learning Outcome 5: be familiar with a range of readily available resources, objects and tools that can be used to enhance students’ online learning and engagement.

ASSESSMENT

There is no formal assessment associated with this workshop series, however, participants will be awarded a Certificate of Participation jointly awarded by Macquarie University and Principals Academy on successful completion of all workshop components. Pre and between workshop tasks will be set that are crucial to the successful completion of the in-workshop practical work. There is an expectation that participants will allocate between 1 and 2 hours between the workshops to complete these tasks.
