How Students Learn

There is a science to learning and we are finding out more and more about what works best to make a difference for our learners. During this course, participants will be introduced to the science behind how we learn through a research-based model of learning developed by Professor Hattie and his colleagues from the Melbourne University Education Research Institute and the Science of Learning Research Centre.

Participants will consider how learning strategies can be used to maximise the skill, the will and the thrill of learning and what strategies work best at the surface, deep and transfer phases of learning.

This course is focused on strengthening educator competency in

  • describing how students learn using the Model of Learning
  • selecting strategies that work best at the surface, deep and transfer phases of learning

Leave this course with...

  • practical examples, insights and strategies to reflect on and use in your own practice. This day is suitable for educators interested in understanding how students learn regardless of age or stage of development.
  • a supporting resource with further readings and material to assist next steps

This course connects with the SkillsFuture for Educators prioritised area of practice relating to differentiated instruction through the lens of How Student Learn research by determining high impact instructional strategies that work best at different stages of learning to develop students with different strengths and needs.

This course is one of a series of courses. Attend one or attend all courses to explore ways of translating new and relevant research into practice.
