NATURE OF THE COURSE


Effective writing skills are essential for professionals and management executives.

Whether the intended readers of your written work are internal personnel or external stakeholders, they must be able to easily and clearly understand your message. Your writing must also be persuasive if you are making a proposal or an argument.

Clear & Concise Writing is a one-day course for key personnel and school leaders who wish to be more effective in their written communication.

This course is interactive in nature. The discussions and exercises are designed to deepen learning. Anecdotes will be shared to inspire the learning.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES


The learning objectives are:

  1. To learn strategies and techniques to write more clearly, concisely and persuasively.
  2. To learn how to apply these strategies and techniques to various types of writing, such as letters, work reports, management proposals, internal memoranda and minutes of meeting.

Part 2 – Application (2 hours)

  • Writing various types of paper, such as notification letters, work reports, management proposals and internal memos.

Part 3 – Editing (0.5 hour)

  • Writing vis-a-vis Editing
  • Editing Check List

 

Part 4 – Course Summary (1 hour)

  • Summary Exercise*
  • Closing Remarks

 

* For the Summary Exercise, participants will be working on a Word.doc version of their own writing, which should be 1-2 pages or about 250-500 words long.



Lim Soo Ping photoAbout the Presenter: Professor Lim Soo Ping

Lim Soo Ping is a retired Auditor-General of Singapore. He served 37 years in public service first as an engineer, then as an Administrative Service Officer, and finally as Auditor-General.

Following his retirement in 2013, he was appointed professor of accounting (practice) by the Singapore Management University. He is still teaching at SMU, now as an adjunct professor.

Lim Soo Ping has a Mechanical Engineering degree with Distinction from the University of Alberta (Canada), a master's degree in Industrial Engineering and a post-graduate diploma in Business Administration, both from the University of Singapore. He completed the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School.

He served on the boards of several government-linked organisations, including Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Nanyang Polytechnic and The Esplanade Company.

For ten years, he was on the board of governors of SJI International School. He was the first chairman of Equal-Ark Singapore, a charity and IPC that provides counselling support for youth with special needs and the elderly with dementia or clinical depression.

He has given talks on diverse subjects, namely, leadership, corporate governance, decision-making and conflict resolution. He has also given talks on the art and culture of flamenco.

In 2018, he started a two-day writing course for management executives called "Clearly Write" at the SMU Academy. So far, more than 20 runs of the course have been conducted.

In 2019, he published a book entitled Courage and Conviction: Ethical Dilemma, Decision-making, and Resolutions.

In 2020, he was recognised as a Specialist in Adult Education by the Institute for Adult Learning (IAL).

Since 2021, he has been writing his second book, entitled Clear & Concise. The book should be published by this year (2022).

Workshop Fee: S$350.00 per participant. If two or more participants from the same school/organization attend the same workshop, the discounted fee will be S$300.00 per participant for that particular workshop. Fees are subject to GST and include two tea breaks and one lunch.

Other Information: Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis. No refunds will be made for cancellations or in the case of absentees. The Academy accepts replacements for registered participants who cannot attend for whatever reasons.
