Change Management Workshop for Primary School KPs

 

Workshop Description

This workshop will present the context of change in the life of the school as well in the personal life of the teacher and from there, enable the KPs to present the processes that will help their teachers take on the change positively and even contribute to the change.

 

Outcomes

At the end of the workshop, the KPs will be able to

  1. 1.Identify the nature of change
  2. 2.Explain its necessity to their teachers
  3. 3.Develop the structures that will enable change to take place
  4. 4.Identify the processes that will monitor the rate of change among the teachers

 

Course Outline

Morning Session

1.Definition of change
a.Change as sometimes incremental improvements, sometimes whole directions
b.A history of change in Singapore’s education system
c.The present system is the result of changes

2.The purpose behind change

a.Links to changes in the bigger picture of society
b.Links to student and parental issues
c.Teacher experiences of change

3.Impact of change

a.Change in the way of doing things
b.Change in perspective

Afternoon Session

1.Ways of leading change
a.Different forms of leadership dependent on circumstances
b.Ways of generating support

2.Structures that help teachers find change more acceptable

a.Creating simple templates
b.Use of time-lines
c.Communication set-up

3.Processes that help KPs track changes among their staff
a.Pedagogical changes – integrate into lesson observation
b.Recognition patterns – what is being lauded

About Mrs Belinda Charles

Belinda CharlesMrs Belinda Charles is a retired principal who led in both secondary school and junior college for the last 25 years of her teaching career. Her last posting was as the principal of St Andrew’s Secondary School from which she retired at the end of 2010. She was one of the youngest principals to lead a secondary school in 1986 and subsequently a junior college in 1990. Mrs Charles has sat on several committees at education headquarters and was involved in important education review committees including Thinking Schools Learning Nation, leading to her being conferred the Silver Public Administration Medal. For ten years, Mrs Charles was also, concurrently, an adjunct lecturer with the National Institute of Education in the 1990s, conducting modules for
teacher trainees in their pre-service training, courses for qualified teachers coming back for in-service training, and modules for heads of department coming in to do their Diploma in Departmental Management as well as principals-in-training.
