Promoting Character Development in Schools

(Deliver via Zoom)

In the 21st century, academic skills alone are not enough to enable students to have meaningful, productive and flourishing lives. Schools are now seen as institutions that help to develop the whole child, responsible for teaching students about values, ethics and the importance of being a good citizen and moral agent. Fortunately, the emerging science of wellbeing is showing that character can be taught in schools and has tremendous benefits for psychological wellbeing. This course will introduce the science of character development and give teachers the tools help students develop character - without comprising traditional academic education.

Learning Outcomes for this course include:

  • Understand the science of character and how it contributes to wellbeing
  • Understand and apply frameworks for character developing including the VIA Character
  • Strengths: the Jubilee Framework for Character and Virtues
  • Understand how to teach character and integrate character education into existing lessons
  • Discover your own character strengths and how to use them more often
