Workshop Description

Grit
When we look at who succeeds in the world – however we define success – it is clear that doing well in school is only a portion of what is needed. Students do need to be prepared scholastically but that should be the floor, not the ceiling. Preparing students for success in life, not just focusing on success in school, means that we need to help them develop grit. In this presentation, Dr. Hoerr will help us analyze grit and show how we can make our schools and classrooms more conducive to teaching it.

Outcomes:
1. Participants will learn the importance of “success skills” in preparing students for success in life
2. Participants will understand the aspects of grit and its importance
3. Participants will learn the six steps in fostering grit in classrooms and schools
4. Participants will develop strategies for developing grit in their students (and themselves!)

Faculty Collegiality
Collegiality – a school climate in which teachers learn with and from one another – is the most important factor in determining the quality of a school. And yet as simple as this sounds, it is difficult to achieve. Dr. Hoerr will explain the components of collegiality and share strategies for how to pursue each one. Participants will have time to develop a plan for building collegiality in their schools.

Outcomes:
1. Participants will have an understanding of the importance of faculty collegiality
2. Participants will learn the four components of collegiality
3. Participants will develop strategies for teaching of the collegiality components

Workshop Description

MI: The theory of Multiple Intelligences derives from the fact that intelligence is problem-solving and there are many different ways to solve problems. Unfortunately, too often schools only offer narrow pathways for students to learn. Dr. Hoerr's school, the New City School in St. Louis, began using MI in 1988, and has played a leadership role in showing others how to use MI. In this session, Dr. Hoerr will share strategies that teachers and principals can use in bringing MI into their schools.

Outcomes:
1. Participants will understand the ways that intelligence has been designed and what this implies
2. Participants will learn the eight multiple intelligences and the distributed intelligence
3. Participants will develop strategies for implementing MI and DI in schools and classrooms
4. Participants will understand the non-instructional aspects that are necessary for an MI implementation

Workshop Description

Dr. Hoerr's newest book (to be published in November), The Formative 5: Fostering Grit, Empathy, and Other Success Skills Every Student Needs, sets out the skills that we need to develop in our students: empathy, self-control, integrity, diversity, and grit. Outcomes:
1. Participants will understand how the Formative Five fit within non-cognitive skills
2. Participants will learn the definitions and steps for teaching of each of the Formative Five
3. Participants will develop strategies for teaching each of the Formative Five

Workshop Description

Old forms of authority and "command and control" lines of authority don't work in the twenty-first century. This means that leading a school and growing a faculty is more challenging today than ever before. Principals need to understand curriculum and instruction but those are not the most important keys to the leadership puzzle! In this workshop we will look at individual power and assess our own power bases, and focus on strategies to use in building school climate, creating faculty collegiality, goal-setting, and parent communication.

Outcomes:
1. Participants will have an understanding of their leadership styles and strengths
2. Participants will learn the four components of collegiality
3. Participants will develop strategies for teaching of the collegiality components
4. Participants will learn the six components of organizational climate
5. Participants will develop strategies for teaching each of the culture components.
