Master Class Description

Focus and Purpose

The goal for this short course is to deepen the knowledge of participants on high quality infant and toddler care. The course will provide a brief overview of infant and toddler development and then make important connections to high quality care and education for children ages birth to three.

Theoretical perspectives and empirical research will be used as a foundation to support current views on how very young children learn, grow, and develop during infancy and toddlerhood. An emphasis will be placed on classroom settings for infants and toddlers and the role of teachers in guiding and enhancing the learning and development of this important age group. Zero to Three Critical Competencies for Infant-Toddler EducatorsTM (Dean, LeMoine, & Mayoral, 2016) will be used as a guiding framework for the course content on how infant and toddlers learn, and the design and delivery of quality classrooms.

The course will also provide a brief overview of curriculum ideas for educating professionals working with infants and toddlers, and will summarize some internationally used assessment instruments for this age group. The course will provide a platform for dialogue on important issues for quality infant and toddler care.

Teaching Strategies

The course information will be delivered through a series of lectures, small group discussions, and participant activities. Photographs and video segments will be used to help illustrate concepts and encourage participants to engage in meaningful discussions about key ideas. Handouts of main lecture points and other course materials will be made available for distribution to participants.
