Keynote 4

Differentiated Instruction: Why Bother? Who Needs It?

Since our students learn in different ways, we must teach in different ways to reach all of them - that is, finding different pathways rather than using a take-it or leave-it approach. DI is a very popular approach, but it is sometimes misunderstood. It means changing how we teach to better connect the curriculum to our students. Specific instructional practices to accomplish this will be presented to make Differentiation worthwhile for teachers and students.

Differentiation Without Guilt: Four Doable Ways to Differentiate Instruction

Learn four very doable teaching techniques to differentiate your instruction: 1. offer your students occasional choices to instill ownership and buy-in; 2. design tiered assignments at varying degrees of difficulty; 3. provide multi-modal learning activities that incorporate visual, tactic, musical, as well as textual modes ; 4. use flexible, temporary cooperative learning groups using seven different configurations that allow students to work with all classmates. Additionally, you will learn how to differentiate your assessment.
