The workshop on Teaching and Assessment of Comprehension Processes with an Emphasis on Learning Through Dialogue will support participating educators in improving primary aged children's ability to use various comprehension processes such as close reading, predicting, questioning, summarising, clarifying, visualising, self-monitoring and reflection through the use of various dialogic strategies. Teachers will also examine ways by which to identify their students' reading and comprehension skills and explore how dialogic strategies can be used to improve areas of weakness and build upon strengths.

Outcomes:

  1. Understand key theory and research on comprehension processes for primary school students
  2. Discuss and critique practical dialogic strategies for developing comprehension processes
  3. Discuss and critique strategies for assessing primary aged children's use of comprehension processes

 


 About the Presenter: Assoc Professor Grace Oakley

Associate Professor Grace Oakley is a lecturer and researcher at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Western Australia. Her research interests centre on literacy and learning technologies, from early childhood to adolescence. She also has an interest in teacher education, particularly in relation to the teaching and learning of literacy and English.
