(For Secondary School English Teachers)


The workshop on Teaching and Assessment of Comprehension Processes with an Emphasis on Learning Through Dialogue will support teachers in improving their students' use of comprehension strategies such as close reading, predicting, clarification, questioning, summarising and reflection through various dialogic strategies. Teachers will also examine ways by which to identify their students' reading and comprehension skills and explore how dialogic strategies can improve areas of weakness and build upon strengths.

Outcomes

  1. Understand key theory and research on comprehension processes for secondary school students
  2. Discuss and critique practical dialogic strategies for developing comprehension processes
  3. Discuss and critique strategies for assessing secondary school students' use of comprehension processes

 


 About the Presenter: Dr Jennifer Shand




Doctor Jennifer Shand is a lecturer in English Curriculum studies at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Western Australia. Her research interests include the teaching of literature, writing pedagogy, middle and upper school English curriculum, cross-curricula literacy, and young adult fiction. She has worked at the level of Senior Teacher and Head of Department where she mentored new and English pre-service teachers, developed teaching programs and taught English and Literature at all year levels.
