Assessment Capable Learners

Imagine students who OWN their learning in these terms: "I know where I'm going, I have the tools I need for the journey, and I monitor my own progress". Now think about the extraordinary difference this type of ownership makes in students' progress over the course of a school year and how it influences their lifelong learning.

The Visible Learning research is clear that when students know how to learn and are aware of strategies to help them learn, they are able to become their own teachers. If there is one core message in this workshop that we want you to come away with, it is this: assessment-capable learners are cultivated by assessment-capable teachers.

This course is focused on strengthening educator competency in

  • increasing student capacity to take responsibility for their own learning
  • choosing learning strategies that fuel student progress

Leave this course with:

  • a description of the characteristics of assessment-capable teachers and learners
  • strategies that support learners to be productive and engaged, using the tenets of Visible Learning research
  • real-world examples from North American and Asia-Pacific schools that support developing the skills and self-awareness involved in being assessment capable
  • a supporting resource with further readings and material to assist next steps

This course connects with the SkillsFuture for Educators prioritised areas of practice relating to assessment literacy and inquiry-based learning through the lens of Visible Learning by designing learning experiences to develop student intrinsic motivation to learn and thrive as learners and nurturing student voice in learning

This course is one of a series of courses. Attend one or attend all courses to explore ways of translating new and relevant research into practice.
