There is an interesting paradox in teacher-development—one that merits our on-going attention. Most teachers feel somewhat (or significantly!) uncertain as they begin their classroom careers. Sometimes that results in planning and instruction that are less than commendable. Researchers tell us that, to survive and thrive as educators, teachers must develop predictable habits and routines that are much more promising for students and much less stress-inducing for teachers themselves by their third year in the classroom or face the possibility of leaving the career for which they prepared. The paradox is that once we establish those habits and routines that enable us to teach at a professional level, they become very difficult to change. In other words, the routines and habits that enable us to become viable teachers may well stand in the way of our becoming highly proficient teachers. This webinar is based on a book with the same title authored by Carol Ann Tomlinson and published in July, 2021. The webinar is a refresher-course in quality practices of teachers who aspire to place students at the center of their work. In it, we will look at "best practice" in various aspects of teaching. The session will examine topics such as the attributes of learner-centered teachers, what it means to honor learners, curriculum that honors the learner and learning, learner-centered assessment, and learner-centered instruction. In 2019, she was ranked #8 in the Education Week Edu-Scholar Public Presence Rankings of 200 "University-based academics who are contributing most substantially to public debates about schools and schooling," and as the #3 voice in Educational Psychology. She works throughout the United States and internationally with educators who seek to create classrooms that are more effective with academically diverse student populations.

Carol Ann Tomlinson is William Clay Parrish, Jr. Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education where she served as Chair of Educational Leadership, Foundations, and Policy, and Co-Director of the University's Institutes on Academic Diversity. Prior to joining the faculty at UVa, she was a public school teacher for 21 years. During that time, she taught students in high school, preschool, and middle school and also administered programs for struggling and advanced learners. She was Virginia's Teacher of the Year in 1974. Carol is also a member of the Singapore Principals Academy's International Advisory Panel.
